With TikTok’s upcoming shutdown on 19th January 2025, users are flocking to Chinese platform Xiaohongshu (小红书) also known as ‘Rednote’. Xiaohongshu, which means ‘Little Red Book’ is similar to TikTok, offering short form content and e-commerce shops.

Yesterday, the app became the top free downloaded platform on the App Store. It is one of China’s top growing platforms with over 300 million active users.

Since the app is primarily in Mandarin, some American users have started learning the language to communicate on the platform, even using the hashtag #tiktokrefugee

Celebrities like Selena Gomez and Pedro Pascal have already migrated to the app with ‘ticked’ verified accounts.

Youtube star, MrBeast is rumoured to be purchasing TikTok in order to prevent the ban in the US. In a recent TikTok, MrBeast shared that he has been in conversation with potential investors and ‘has an offer ready and wants to buy the platform’.

In 2024, President Joe Biden enacted legislation that would prohibit TikTok in the US if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, does not sell the app by January 19, 2025. If ByteDance fails to comply, TikTok will be blocked in the US, and it will be illegal for app stores to offer the platform. If the US Supreme Court does not intervene, the app will no longer be available to download or update beginning on Sunday.

We look forward to seeing how this all unfolds next week and whether we’ll all be seeing you on Rednote!
